Grafton - The Ghost Town

Grafton was one of several settlements along the Virgin River colonized in the 1850s. The early settlers intended to grow cotton there, but river floods and the "Black Hawk War" forced many residents to move from the area. The last resident moved away in 1935.

Grafton is less than 4 miles from Amber Inn Bed and Breakfast. From the center of Rockville take the side road over the bridge (the same road can take you to the Pipe Spring National Monument and to the North Rim of Grand Canyon as well). About 2 miles later, when you reach the "No Outlet" sign, take the right turn, despite the sign (the left turn turn would take you to road 59). The road is unpaved, but quite passable when dry (which is almost always here!), and it offers several spectacular views like the one shown here: (click on the images to see them enlarged)

A couple miles farther, and you will reach Grafton. This is where the famous "Rain Drops Falling On My Head" scene from "Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid" western was filmed.
